    • Critical Care & Flight Paramedic Course Overview

      About the Course

The North American Rescue Critical Care & Flight Paramedic Course is an intensive, three-day, in-person FP-C® and CCP-C® exam preparation course for experienced paramedics seeking advanced education in critical care and transport medicine.

Hosted by the Eugene Springfield Fire Department in Eugene, Oregon, this course is designed for flight paramedics, critical care paramedics, advanced paramedics, transport clinicians, and other experienced EMS professionals preparing for the International Board of Specialty Certification FP-C® or CCP-C® examinations.

The course moves beyond memorizing facts and focuses on understanding the why behind critical care medicine. Through instructor-led lessons, clinical case discussions, patient scenarios, and focused certification review, students will strengthen the clinical judgment needed to manage critically ill and injured patients during ground critical care transport and air medical transport.

Students will learn how to connect physiology, patient assessment findings, laboratory results, monitoring data, and treatment decisions. The course also provides practical exam-preparation strategies to help students identify key information, work through complex certification questions, recognize knowledge gaps, and approach the FP-C® or CCP-C® examination with greater confidence.

This course is also appropriate for currently certified FP-C® and CCP-C® clinicians seeking advanced continuing education and an approved certification review course for recertification.

      Core Clinical Review Areas

      • Advanced airway management
      • Mechanical ventilation
      • Respiratory emergencies
      • Hemodynamics and shock
      • Cardiovascular care
      • Neurologic emergencies
      • Trauma
      • Critical care pharmacology
      • Laboratory interpretation
      • Diagnostic findings
      • Transport safety
      • Altitude and flight physiology

      Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

      • Differentiate the roles, responsibilities, and clinical priorities of flight and critical care transport paramedics.
      • Apply advanced anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to critically ill and injured patients.
      • Assess airway risk and select appropriate primary, backup, and rescue airway strategies.
      • Interpret ventilator settings, waveforms, arterial blood gas results, and patient findings.
      • Recognize different forms of shock and select appropriate fluids, blood products, medications, and monitoring strategies.
      • Interpret hemodynamic values to evaluate perfusion, cardiac function, and treatment response.
      • Apply advanced assessment and treatment principles to cardiovascular, respiratory, neurologic, medical, and traumatic emergencies.
      • Review critical care medications, infusions, calculations, indications, contraindications, and safety concerns.
      • Interpret common laboratory values, diagnostic findings, and monitoring trends during critical care transport.
      • Explain how altitude and flight physiology affect the patient, crew, equipment, and transport plan.
      • Develop safe transport plans based on patient condition, anticipated complications, available resources, and the transport environment.
      • Use a structured clinical judgment process to prioritize treatment and reassess patient response.
      • Apply practical test-taking strategies to complex FP-C® and CCP-C® examination questions.
      • Identify personal knowledge gaps and develop a focused certification study plan.

      Course Structure

This is a three-day, in-person critical care paramedic course delivered through instructor-led presentations, case-based discussions, clinical scenarios, and targeted FP-C® and CCP-C® examination review.

Training focuses on practical decision-making rather than memorization alone. Students will examine complex patient presentations, connect assessment findings to underlying physiology, evaluate treatment options, and review the clinical topics commonly encountered in critical care and air medical transport.

      Format: In-Person

      Length: 3 Days

      Instruction: Instructor-Led

Learning Methods: Clinical cases, patient scenarios, exam review, and guided discussion

Primary Focus: FP-C® and CCP-C® preparation, critical care transport, and air medical medicine

      Continuing Education Credit

      CAPCE Continuing Education

Successful completion of this course provides 32 hours of CAPCE-accredited continuing education for EMS professionals.

      IBSC-Approved Review Course

The course includes an IBSC-approved 16-hour FP-C®/CCP-C® review course for currently certified clinicians completing the approved review-course portion of their recertification requirements.

The IBSC-approved review course hours are one part of the complete FP-C® or CCP-C® continuing education recertification requirements. Students are responsible for confirming and completing all additional requirements established by IBSC, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and their state EMS licensing agency.
