Course Overview

The Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Provider Hands-On Skills Course by North American Rescue Training & Education (NAR-T) is an 8-hour in-person training designed for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, physician assistants, physicians, and other prehospital providers who need to complete the hands-on skills portion of their NAEMT PHTLS Provider Course. This evidence-based trauma training equips students with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to manage critically injured patients in real-world EMS scenarios.

This course follows the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) guidelines and integrates current trauma care best practices to help providers assess and manage trauma patients efficiently in the prehospital setting.

Upon successful completion, students will receive:

  • PHTLS Provider Certification (valid for 4 years)
  • 8 hours of CAPCE credit for continuing education
  • A certificate of completion and a wallet card recognizing their PHTLS provider status

This hands-on training is conducted in person at our state-of-the-art NAR-T Training Facility in Las Vegas, NV.


Course Structure

This course is structured as an in-person skills training session, which requires students to complete the online PHTLS course separately before attending the hands-on skills session.

Step 1: Complete the Online PHTLS Course (8 Hours)

  • The online portion is completed through Jones & Bartlett Learning (not included with course tuition).
  • Students must purchase and complete the online course separately before attending the PHTLS Hands-On Skills Day.
  • After completion, students must upload the online course certificate to their PHTLS profile before scheduling the in-person skills session.
  • The online course includes interactive trauma scenarios, case-based learning, and XABCDE trauma assessment training (eXsanguinating hemorrhage, Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Expose/Environment).
  • Earns 8 hours of CAPCE-approved credit upon completion.

Step 2: Attend the In-Person PHTLS Hands-On Skills Course (8 Hours)

  • Hands-on training takes place at the NAR-T Advanced Training Facility in Las Vegas, NV.
  • Includes lecture-based instruction, hands-on skills stations, and scenario-based trauma simulations.
  • Focuses on critical trauma interventions such as:
    • Airway management
    • Hemorrhage control
    • Spinal immobilization
    • Rapid trauma assessment
    • Patient packaging for transport
  • Training is conducted in an immersive learning environment, allowing students to practice real-world emergency scenarios under expert guidance.

By the end of this PHTLS Hands-On Skills Course, students will be able to:
✔️ Conduct rapid and systematic trauma assessments using primary and secondary survey methods.
✔️ Perform critical prehospital interventions, including airway management, hemorrhage control, and spinal immobilization.
✔️ Understand the physiological and pathophysiological processes of trauma to support evidence-based decision-making.
✔️ Stabilize and prepare trauma patients for safe transport to definitive care facilities.
✔️ Work effectively within an EMS team to manage multi-system trauma cases.

Class Attire

👕 Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for hands-on training and practical skill stations.
⚠️ Please note: Simulation, moulage, and artificial blood may be used during training. Dress accordingly.
